What AI citation tracking means

AI citation tracking records source URLs that an engine attributes to a captured answer and groups them by registered domain and full page URL. It helps explain which sources were visible with the answer without claiming that every engine exposes its retrieval process.

Three signals that should not be confused

Mentions, citations, and owned-source share answer different questions. Reviewing them together prevents a brand name in an answer from being mistaken for evidence that the brand website influenced it.

  • A mention means the brand alias appears in captured answer text.
  • A citation means the engine exposed a source URL with that answer.
  • Owned citation percentage is the share of observed citations whose registered domain belongs to the monitored brand.

How citation evidence is organized

The same captured citations can be inspected at several levels so teams can move from a pattern to the supporting answer.

  • Top domains show which publishers recur across the selected scope.
  • Top pages preserve the full URLs that appeared with answers.
  • Source categories separate owned, institutional, media, consumer, commerce, reference, and other sources.
  • Engine views keep citation behavior and capability differences visible.

Turn source gaps into content work

Citation patterns can guide investigation and prioritization when they are read with the answer and question context.

  • Find important question areas where outside domains appear but your own pages do not.
  • Strengthen clear definitions and verifiable evidence on pages relevant to those questions.
  • Check later runs to see whether the observed source mix changes on a comparable basis.

Only answer-level citations count

simplyBrand includes structured citation metadata when it is available and may use URLs present in answer text when that is the only answer-level signal. Browsed or searched pages that the engine does not attribute to the answer are excluded.

This boundary makes the result auditable and avoids presenting an engine's unseen search process as a public citation.

Citation coverage has real limits

Some engine interfaces do not expose citations, and a citation-capable engine may return an answer with no sources. Unavailable citation evidence is shown as n/a and excluded from cross-engine citation denominators rather than converted into zero.

AI citation tracking questions

What is an AI citation?

An AI citation is a source URL that an answer engine exposes with a generated answer. It is evidence of an attributed source for that answer within the captured interface.

Does a brand mention mean its website was cited?

No. A brand can be named without any owned page being cited and a brand page can be cited without the answer expressing a favorable view.

Why are citations unavailable for some engines?

Engine interfaces expose different metadata. When citations are not exposed simplyBrand marks the citation metric unavailable instead of treating the missing evidence as zero.
